THE Challenge

THE MANDER CENTRE

A prominent shopping centre in Wolverhampton City Centre, The Mander Centre first opened in 1968, boasts over 100 stores and services and attracts over a million visitors annually.

Given the scale and prestige of the building, GLRE's Midlands Division was entrusted with replacing the large external roof glazing. The project presented a unique challenge: completing the work efficiently while minimizing disruption to the Centre's ongoing operations.

At GLRE, we possess extensive experience working within busy commercial environments across the UK. Over our 30 years in business, we have established ourselves as experts in the installation, repair, and replacement of complex, difficult-access glazing. We offer a comprehensive range of services and solutions to meet all your glazing requirements.

THE Solution

Mander Centre Roof Glazing Refurbishment: Overcoming Logistical Challenges

GLRE was given the complex task of replacing three defective double-glazed units (DGUs) on the roof of the Mander Centre. The project demanded a high level of expertise due to several factors:

  • Logistical Operations: We required a meticulous plan to transport all materials to the site and safely maneuver the oversized glazing units to their designated locations on the roof.
  • Difficult Access: The roof's elevation necessitated the use of specialist external access equipment to ensure the safe handling of the glazing units by our team of qualified technicians.

Following a comprehensive health and safety glazing inspection, GLRE was awarded the project to restore the roof glazing to a fully functional state.

Specialist Access and Execution

The bespoke atrium design and central location of the Mander Centre necessitated a unique approach. To minimise disruption to the shopping centre's operations, we conducted the work outside of regular business hours. Our access specialists devised a comprehensive plan to reach the challenging location. This plan involved a combination of:

  • Internal MEWP (Mobile Elevated Work Platform): Provided a platform for technicians to access specific areas.
  • Abseil Technicians: Highly skilled technicians ensured safe access to difficult-to-reach sections.
  • Mobile Tower Crane: Facilitated the safe lifting and positioning of the oversized glazing units.

Upon completion of the replacements, our team performed a thorough cleaning of the rooflights and surrounding area, finalising the project.

GLRE's Comprehensive Service:

We provided a detailed project schedule, method statement, and risk assessments, ensuring complete transparency throughout the project. Our services encompassed:

  • Complete Removal and Replacement: Safe removal of existing damaged glazing units and installation of new DGUs.
  • Procurement: We sourced and procured the necessary high-quality glazing materials
  •

Glazing Survey and Report

As part of the project scope, we compiled a comprehensive and competitive quotation. This involved:

  • Surveying and Report Production: A dedicated team surveyed the site, produced detailed gridwork drawings, and conducted inspections of the glazing and façade.
  • Written Report: A comprehensive report outlined the following:
    • The quantity of all defective glazing and components.
    • Site-specific health and safety assessments identifying any potential hazards and mitigation strategies.
    • Cost estimates for the remedial works.
    • A Detailed Risk Assessment and Method Statement (RAMS).

IRATA-Qualified Abseil Technicians

Our IRATA Level 3 qualified abseil technicians played a crucial role in the safe removal and disposal of all existing damaged glazing and construction waste generated throughout the project. They utilized rope access techniques to support the ground crew with the replacements from the building's exterior elevations.

Project Completion and Transparency

Upon project completion, the work area was meticulously cleared, ensuring a pristine handover. Our fully inclusive fixed-price quotation encompassed all access equipment, consumables, and labor required for a successful project execution.
